As you plan to come visit me, the code for the main Melbourne airport is MEL. (Sydney is SYD.)You can go to travelocity or expedia or studentuniverse and put those airports on their "fare watcher" option, and they can email you whenever the fare drops below a certain point.
Low season fares to Australia will be anything under $1000-ish. but there are cheap fare deals all the time, so something may come up at other times. Those are often around $750-900 RT. (and no, I don't know which months exactly are "low season"...)
